ATHENS, Ga. ---- The Georgia Swimmers and Divers improved their times and scores as they hosted the first day of the Bulldog Last Chance Meet on Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Freshman diver Darcie O'Brien qualified for the Zone B Diving Championships on platform with a score of 229.70. O'Brien also improved her score on the 1 meter, earning a 261.50.
"I felt pretty confident on tower, so I was ready for it," said O'Brien. "It got down to the last dive, so it was really exciting. It's awesome and I'm really excited to be going to Zones."
Several Lady Bulldogs improved their season-best times, including freshmen Anna Neumeister, who finished with a 4:15.50 in the 400 individual medley and Olivia Boggs, who clocked in at 1:02.21 in the 100 breaststroke. Jessica Graber earned a b-cut time of 49.76 for a season-best in the 100 freestyle while Melanie Margalis clocked a b-cut time in the 100 backstroke with a 54.52 to improve her season-best.
The Bulldogs also swam season-best times, including senior Peter Benner, who clocked in with a 49.79 in the 100 butterfly. Freshman Spencer Rowe earned a b-cut time by finishing with a 55.48 in the 100 breaststroke. Christian Riess swam a season-best time of 1:50.46 in the 200 individual medley, while freshman James Bowen improved his season-best times in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, finishing in 50.88 and 58.72, respectively.
"The meet today was fairly typical of a last chance meet", said coach Harvey Humphries. "We have so many of our swimmers in different phases of training. They raced against kids who were rested and shaved and they competed really well. Although they were at a physiological disadvantage coming off last week's war at SECs, they just went after it and raced hard. A lot of our kids who didn't get to swim at SECs are swimming lifetime bests, and we're really proud of them as well."
The meet will continue Sunday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m., while finals will be held at 4 p.m. There is no charge for admission.
