Top 10 Social Media Moments Of 2011
COMMIT TO THE G

Dec. 22, 2011

ATHENS, Ga. --- As we count down the final days of 2011 and usher in another great year for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2012, we'd like to remember all the great things that happened this year at UGA. The following will be a countdown of some of the best moments of 2011 as seen through our social media. We hope you will join us over the next 10 days in celebrating!

And as always, you can stay connected by "liking" our Facebook page (Facebook.com/GeorgiaBulldogs) and following us on Twitter (@UGAAthletics).

Thank you for helping make this a great year and we will see you in 2012.

#10: One of the largest responses to a social media post in 2011 was this one, coming in at #10 on our top-10 list. This photo was taken at the Georgia Dome before the SEC Championship game between Georgia and LSU on Dec. 3 and posted on Facebook, where it drew over 6,000 "likes," 800 comments, and 300 shares. The Georgia Bulldogs thank our amazing fans for their support that day and every day. Check back tomorrow for Social Media Moment #9!

#9: Coming in at #9 on our countdown of Social Media Moments is just one of the many great tweets from head women's basketball coach Andy Landers featuring his beloved cow, Buster. Coach Landers (@UGACoachLanders) was new to the Twitter scene in 2011, but has quickly grown a loyal following thanks to outside-the-box posts like this one.

#8: We used Facebook earlier this fall as we unveiled the brand new floor at Stegeman Coliseum in a photo posted on October 24, good for our #8 Social Media Moment. Stegeman Coliseum has been the recipient of renovations and facelifts throughout the past two years, a series of upgrades that culminated with the new court purchased by Georgia from the NCAA.

#7: In honor of the holiday season, we used Twitter to show off this picture of the Christmas tree on display in the Sports Communications office, chosen as #7 on our list. Then we asked you to send in YOUR holiday decorations that best displayed your love of Georgia and the Bulldogs. The response was amazing, and we tried to retweet as many of your pictures as possible. Some of the best were then read by Kevin Copp (@KevinCoppUGA) on the holiday edition of #TRENDING, our weekly current events feature airing every Friday on Georgiadogs.com. Thank you so much for sharing your Georgia decorations with us, and please have a very happy and healthy Holiday season!

#6: Coach Landers was at it again on Twitter when he and the staff decided to release the Lady Bulldogs’ 2011-12 schedule via Landers’ Twitter page. It was the first time something like that had been done here at UGA and we believe one of the first in the nation, too. Coach Landers tweeted a few of the Lady Dogs’ games over the course of a week, before posting the full schedule in its entirety to Georgiadogs.com on Aug. 26. This idea comes in at #6 on our list of Social Media Moments.

#5: Today we would like to give a shout-out to our wonderful Marketing & Promotions staff for their fantastic use of social media, coming in at #5 on our list. The staff launched a “Tweetup” series, which included a bunch of great giveaways that required fans to complete tasks or find things on campus to win prizes during the beginning of basketball season – all announced on our Twitter page. The very first contest was this one – where fans were asked to ring the Chapel Bell to win a signed photo of Coach Mark Fox. Congratulations to our winners and thank you for following us for great opportunities like this one!

#4: Coming in at #4 on our list of Social Media Moments came after a very sad day at Georgia with the passing of the legendary Larry Munson in November. The following day, we asked you to post your best stories and memories on our Facebook page, and we were overwhelmed with the outpouring as over 200 of you posted on the thread. It was great to be able to grieve with other Bulldog fans and we’re glad we could all come together to remember Larry.

#3: Our #3 Social Media Moment involved a friendly wager between Coach Landers and Bulldog alum/professional golfer Bubba Watson. The two bet on whether or not Watson could hit a golf ball out of Sanford Stadium – and he did, giving new meaning to the phrase “Tee it up Between the Hedges.” Watch the video here– it is pretty astounding.

#2: Certainly one of the most memorable moments of the 2011 football season was Georgia’s 63-16 win over New Mexico State on Nov. 5 – a game that saw nine UGA scores by nine different players. One of those was by tight end Aron White, who helped the Bulldogs tie a school record with their fifth TD pass of the half. But what was even more special about Aron's catch was where he ended up after the play, which we captured on film and posted to our Facebook page before the game was over. This special piece of footage ranks as our #2 Social Media Moment, and you can watch it here.

#1: So, what’s our #1 Social Media Moment of 2011? Well, while the game may not have gone as planned, the hype surrounding the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic was something special – due in large part to the flashy new uniforms the Bulldogs wore for the game. As part of Nike’s Pro Combat Rivalry series, Georgia donned all-red uniforms and silver helmets vs. Boise State. The uniforms were shown off to fans for the first time at the annual Picture Day in August, but were displayed first in a photo on our Facebook page. It was great to be able to show off the special new look, and what better way to do so than to connect with everyone who follows along with and supports us all year long?

Thank you for following our Top-10 Social Media Moments of 2011! Please continue to stay connected all year long for behind-the-scenes looks into your Georgia Bulldogs on Facebook (Facebook.com/GeorgiaBulldogs) and Twitter (@UGAAthletics). Happy New Year!
