ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 1-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team (28-0) defeated Auburn (15-9) by a score of 4-0 Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. With the win, Georgia advances to the Round of 16 where they will meet rival Florida, who upset Florida State Saturday to earn a trip to Athens. Georgia’s win was clinched by senior John Isner (Greensboro, N.C) as he defeated 56th-ranked Alex Schweizer, 7-5, 7-6 (8). The match had been moved inside due to rain and lightning.

“This was not an easy match by any means,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “Every match was tightly played and highly contested. John played a good tiebreak but overall it wasn’t a great match. He was not at his best but he got a good win. We will have our hands full against Florida. They have won a lot of tight matches and they are very strong at the top of the lineup. The doubles point will be crucial and hopefully we will not give up anything at the top of the lineup.”

Georgia began the match by winning the doubles for the 27th time in its 28 matches. First to finish was the No. 1-ranked tandem of senior John Isner (Greensboro, N.C.) and junior Luis Flores (Xalapa, Mexico) who defeated 39th-ranked Alex Schweizer and Robbert Lathouwers at the top spot, 8-5. The point was clinched at the third position as the freshman duo of Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg topped Lukas Marsoun and Alexey Tsyrenov, 8-3. Georgia was also leading 5-2 at the second position when the point was clinched and that match was halted.

Georgia then took a 2-0 lead as 35th-ranked Omerzel defeated Tsyrenov at the fourth spot, 6-4, 6-2. No 14-ranked Flores then made it a 3-0 Bulldog advantage with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Lathouwers, 6-4, 6-1, setting Isner up for the clinch.

When Georgia clinched the match, the remaining contests were halted. At that time, Helgeson had split with Marsoun, 6-0, 5-7 and had not started the third set. Schnugg was leading Dilaj, 2-1 in the first set and Hunt had not begun his match yet.

The shutout was the 19th of the year for Georgia.

The Bulldogs will take on Florida in the Round of 16. The No. 17-32 seeded Gators advanced to Athens by going on the road to upset 16th-seeded Florida State, 4-3, in Tallahassee. The match is slated for May 17 at 6 p.m.
