RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The fifth-ranked Georgia men’s golf team posted its first victory of the season on Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Classic.

Despite a final-round, 6-over-par 294, the Bulldogs held on for a 1-shot win on the par-72, 6,945-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Golf Club. Georgia wound up at 14-under 850, with Clemson and Stanford following at 851.

“It certainly feels good to win again,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “We didn’t have our best day, but we fought through it and we did what we needed to do to stay on top. I was proud of the way the guys handled themselves.”

Before Tuesday, the Bulldogs’ last victory had been at the 2006 Linger Longer Invitational in May. During Haack’s watch, which began in 1996-97, the Bulldogs now have won 29 tournaments.

Senior Brendon Todd and freshman Hudson Swafford finished at 5-under 211 and in a tie for fifth place to pace the Bulldogs. Swafford closed with a 1-under 71 and Todd carded a final-round 3-over 75. Stanford’s Joseph Bramlett and Georgia Tech’s Roberto Castro shared medalist honors at 7-under 209.

Sophomore Brian Harman wound up in 10th at 3-under 213 as he finished with a 1-over 73. Sophomore Adam Mitchell took 17th at 1-under 215 after firing a 3-over 75 in the final round. Senior Chris Kirk’s 5-over 77 on Tuesday gave him a three-day total of 10-over 226.

The Bulldogs will return to action March 9-11 at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas.
