OKLAHOMA CITY – Eighth-ranked Georgia fell to third-ranked Washington, 3-1, in the opening game of the 2009 Women's College World Series at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium on Thursday.
Washington (47-11) advances in the winner's bracket to face the winner of game two between Arizona State and Missouri on Friday. Georgia (44-11) falls to the loser's bracket and will take on the loser of the Arizona State-Missouri game on Saturday at Noon ET on ESPN.
The Huskies' Danielle Lawrie pitched a complete-game allowing six hits while walking two and striking out five to improve to 38-7. Senior Christie Hamilton suffered the loss to fall to 24-9 after surrendering three runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort.
The game remained scoreless until Washington went up 2-0 in the fourth. After Lauren Greer drew a two-out walk, Niki Williams hit a two-run home run to center.
Georgia cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Senior Kristin Schnake (2-for-3) led off with a double down the right field line, and two batters later, sophomore All-American Taylor Schlopy double to left scoring the run.
Washing scratched across the game's final run in the sixth. Greer reached on a one-out single that fell in left just past the edge of the infield dirt. After the Bulldogs picked up the second out, Ashley Charters singled to left moving Greer to second. Kimi Pohlman followed with a RBI single to center.
