Bryce Massanari led the offensive onslaught for Georgia (1-0), going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Colby May, Johnathan Taylor and Zach Cone each had two hits and two RBI in their Bulldog debuts, and Rich Poythress and Michael Demperio also added two hits apiece.
Trevor Holder (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits in 5.1 innings to pick up the win.
“The freshmen played great,” said Georgia head coach David Perno. “They were nervous coming out of the gate, but then they relaxed. “Colby hit the batter’s eye, and Johnathan and Levi (Hyams) are just electric players out there. They’re really fun to watch. Zach made a couple of nice plays, and Chase played well too.”
The Bulldogs scored their first run in the second inning as Massanari laced a double to right field, and Joey Lewis doubled down the left field line on the next pitch to give Georgia a 1-0 lead.
Georgia struck again in the third when Taylor walked and May blasted a home run to center field to push the lead to 3-0.
In the fourth, Hyams singled then scored on a double by Taylor, and the Bulldogs added a pair of runs in the fifth when Davidson doubled, scoring Lewis, then Cone followed with an RBI single to give Georgia a 6-0 lead.
Youngstown State (0-1) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on three hits including a leadoff double by David Leon and a triple by Eric Hymel.
Georgia got both runs back in the bottom of the sixth and added six more in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Aaron Swenson (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 4.1 innings for Youngstown State.
Cecil Tanner, Justin Earls and Dean Weaver pitched 3.2 scoreless innings for the Georgia bullpen, surrendering just four hits.
Every Georgia starter had at least one hit, and Georgia’s 15 runs scored was its most on opening day since 2000.
“I think the difference on this year’s team is balance,” said Perno. “We did a great job tonight.”
The Bulldogs and Penguins return to action for game two of the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
