ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia pitchers are enjoying a productive summer in various leagues across the country highlighted by All-American closer Joshua Fields.

Recently named to the Cape Cod League All-Star team, Fields has been a key member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The rising junior leads the league with 10 saves. He is 0-1 with a 1.84 ERA with five walks and 21 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched. The Red Sox are one of the top teams in the league with a 22-14 mark. Fields is one of five Bulldog pitchers in the Cape Cod League this summer along with Adam McDaniel (Brewster Whitecaps) Trevor Holder (Bourne Braves), Ben Jeffers (Hyannis Mets) and Nathan Moreau (Chatham A's). McDaniel is 1-1 with a 2.40 ERA and four saves in 15 innings pitched. Holder is 0-1 with a 3.24 ERA in 16.2 innings pitched. Jeffers is 0-2 with a 4.60 ERA and one save in 15.2 innings pitched. Moreau is 0-3 with a 2.08 ERA in 26 innings pitched.

Rising sophomores Stephen Dodson and Jason Leaver are teammates for the Madison (Wis.) Mallards of the Northwoods League. Both Bulldogs have appeared in seven games out of the bullpen. Leaver has yet to allow a run in 9.2 innings pitched. He has 13 strikeouts and five walks to go with an 0-0 record. Dodson is 1-1 with a 0.96 ERA with 18 strikeouts and four walks in 18.2 innings pitched. In Keene, N.H., rising sophomore Iain Sebastian has been a starting pitcher for the Keene Swampbats. Earlier this week, Sebastian notched his second win. He is 2-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched. He has 26 strikeouts and 11 walks in six appearances including four starts.

And in case you missed it last week, a couple of Bulldogs off the 2006 College World Series team were a part of minor league baseball history. Catcher Jason Jacobs and pitcher Rip Warren, both members of the Brooklyn Cyclones, saw significant action in a 26-inning marathon against Oneonta on July 20. Jacobs was behind the plate for the first 17 innings of the 6-1 loss that took six hours and 40 minutes to complete. He was 3-for-7 with a walk. Warren was one of seven pitchers to see action, entering the game in the 19th frame and tossing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts. The game was the longest in New York-Penn League history. The longest major league game by innings was a 26-inning 1-1 tie between the Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers in 1920. The longest professional game was a 3-2 win in 33 innings by Triple-A Pawtucket over Rochester in 1981.

Finally, former Bulldog All-American shortstop Jeff Keppinger is back where he ended his collegiate career, in Omaha, Neb., at Rosenblatt Stadium, home of the Triple-A Omaha Royals. Keppinger, who was acquired from the New York Mets for Ruben Gotay on July 19, starred on Georgia's 2001 College World Series team. On Wednesday, he hit a pair of home runs and scored four runs to lead the Royals to a 5-3 win over the Las Vegas 51s. Keppinger is one of four former Bulldogs currently in Triple-A. Pitcher Will Startup is with the Richmond Braves, catcher/outfielder Robby Hammock is a member of the Tucson Sidewinders and pitcher Mark Watson is playing for the Sacramento River Cats. Watson finished his Georgia career in 1996 while Hammock last played for UGA in 1998. Startup's final year at UGA was 2005. Keppinger, Hammock and Watson have been in the Major Leagues during their professional career.
