In game one, the Bulldogs (6-6) outslugged Florida State 13-10 to hand the Seminoles (13-1) their first loss of the year. Georgia junior catcher Bryce Massanari drove in a career-high five RBI including a two-out, two-run blast in the eighth that provided some insurance as FSU did not go quietly. In the ninth leading 13-10, Georgia senior All-America closer Joshua Fields preserved the victory, retiring the Seminoles in order with two strikeouts for his second save. Georgia used six pitchers in the outing and sophomore Alex McRee (1-0) picked up the win. He pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday before rain halted play.
The series actually began Tuesday and Georgia carried an 8-2 lead to the bottom of the fourth inning when play was suspended due to rain. Georgia grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first when junior shortstop Gordon Beckham smashed a two-run shot to left field off FSU right-hander Mike McGee. It extended his hitting streak to 14 games. With one out, sophomore Michael Demperio reached with a base hit, and then Beckham followed with his team-leading seventh home run. The Seminoles tied the game in their half of the first on a two-run double by right fielder Jack Rye off Bulldog sophomore Dean Weaver.
Georgia went right back to work in the second, scoring four runs on one hits to build a 6-2 advantage. The inning began with Massanari reaching on an error by shortstop Tony Delmonico. After a one-out walk to Matt Cerione, a base hit by Ryan Peisel put Georgia back in front 3-2. After a walk to Demperio loaded the bases, Beckham was hit by a pitch for his third RBI on the night. Poythress earned an RBI on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly by Joey Lewis made it 6-2.
Georgia added single runs in the third and fourth frames to chase McGee. Cerione’s run-scoring double and a sacrifice fly by Massanari extended the Bulldogs lead to 8-2. McGee (2-1) got the loss as he surrendered eight runs (five earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings. He walked four and struck out one before giving way to Tyler Everett.
Meanwhile, Weaver tossed the first two innings and allowed a pair of runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. McRee pitched a scoreless inning and started to warm up in the fourth when play was halted.
“We were in some good games before conference play starts Friday, and we’d like to be two games better record-wise, but we can make that irrelevant if we take care of business in Fayetteville this weekend,” said Georgia coach David Perno. “The most important thing we learned playing these tough opponents early is that if we don’t beat ourselves, we can win a lot of games. We’re finding our niche, and we’ll be tough to beat. We’ve been pushed, and we know who to go with now that league play is starting. We’ve got our rotation, our top eight pitchers and our lineup is pretty set. ”
At 6-6 overall, the Bulldogs went 3-5 against top 20 opponents and handed top-ranked Arizona and third-ranked Florida State their only loss this year.
In game two Wednesday, Georgia used back-to-back doubles from Cerione and Peisel for a 1-0 lead in the top of the third off Seminole starter Bo O’Dell. In the fourth, Beckham led off with a bunt that O’Dell threw away allowing him to reach second. Then, Poythress drilled a single to right and Beckham scored for a 2-0 advantage. The Seminoles got a run in the fourth and tied the contest in the fifth on a close play at first that looked to end the inning. However, Posey was ruled safe on an infield single and Jason Stidham scored on the play.
Olson led off the seventh with a double and Fields moved him to third with a bounce out to second. Pinch-hitter Lyle Allen gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with a run-scoring single. However, the Seminoles came right back in the bottom of the inning off Stephen Brock as Georgia unraveled. FSU scored four runs on one hit and one Bulldog miscue.
Brock hit the first two batters he faced and then on a sacrifice bunt, his throw sailed in to right field and the game was tied. The big blow came with two outs when Dennis Quinn blooped a two-run single for a 6-3 advantage. In the eighth, Stuart Tapley smashed a two-run home run off Ryan Woolley for the 8-3 final.
FSU reliever Jimmy Marshall (2-0) got the win with three scoreless innings while Brock fell to 0-1, allowing four runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Bulldogs begin Southeastern Conference play Friday when it faces 21st-ranked Arkansas (11-2) in Fayetteville. First pitch Friday is slated for 7:35 p.m. ET.
