The University of Georgia Redcoat Band is considered by many to be the "heart" of the Bulldog Spirit. This 380-member component of the School of Music was the recipient of the 2000 Sudler Trophy for musical and visual excellence and innovation over a period of many years. Interim Director of Bands, Dr. John Culvahouse, and Director of the Redcoat Band, Dr. David Romines lead the 101st edition of the band.
In addition to the directors, an extensive staff is vital to the operation of the Redcoat Band. UGA alumnus Tom Wallace prepares the band's musical arrangements while alumnus John Cypert oversees the scoring and instruction for the UGA Drumline. The auxiliary units of the band (Georgettes, Majorettes, Flagline, and Feature Twirlers) are under the leadership of Auxiliary Coordinator Candy Byrd Roland and Flagline Advisor Annie Andrews Mullins, both alumnae of UGA. Former Assistant Director and UGA Alumnus Brett Bawcum coordinates the composition of band drill. The Properties Crew, under the leadership of Katie Charles, is responsible for the band's logistical concerns. Kappa Kappa Psi, a band service fraternity, undertakes many projects serving the entire band program.
The individuals who contribute the most to the success of the Redcoats are the students. Being a Redcoat requires an academic background of significant accomplishment, and a great deal of talent and preparation in one's area of performance specialty. Redcoats commit themselves to 6-8 hours of rehearsal per academic week, while maintaining some of the highest grade-point averages at UGA. Though some 30% of its members are music majors, the other members are involved in many varied pursuits, seeking careers in almost all of the academic disciplines at the University of Georgia. The unique combination of talents that make up the Redcoat Band has produced an organization of which all Georgia supporters can be justifiably proud. Its colorful presence together with its spirited music and motion are a part of what makes college football so special to sports fans. Keep your seats, everyone!
