ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia senior fullback Brannan Southerland of Dacula underwent surgery on his left foot Friday in Athens. Southerland sustained a fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot at the end of last season and underwent surgery to repair the fracture.

Tests performed this week revealed the development of a stress fracture in the same bone in a different location from the initial injury and surgery was performed to repair this fracture. The surgery was performed by Joe Johnson, MD at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.

According to UGA Director of Sports Medicine Ron Courson, a full recovery is expected; however, the projected recovery time is approximately 16 weeks, meaning Southerland will miss pre-season practices and games early in the season.

Southerland has 25 career starts for the Bulldogs after being redshirted as a freshman in 2004. In 2006, he became the first fullback since 1957 (Theron Sapp) to lead the team in scoring with ten touchdowns (eight rushing and two receiving).
