Georgia returns to the court Tuesday night to entertain Southern Conference foe Wofford. The Bulldogs arrive at this game with a 1-0 record, having tipped off the season with a 67-59 win four nights ago in Athens. Wofford enters this game with an 0-1 mark, having lost 63-60 at Pittsburgh on Friday night.
Tuesday’s game has particular significance to a pair of individuals: UGA senior Tyler Whatley, who played his first three collegiate seasons at Wofford before transferring. He sat out the 2009 season in compliance with NCAA transfer rules. Also, Wofford assistant coach Jay McAuley lettered four years for the Bulldogs (2003-06), serving as co-captain in his final season. The Marietta native was also a graduate manager for the 2007 Georgia season.
These two teams have met seven previous times, with Georgia winning each time. The past two meetings, however, (2005, 2009) have needed overtime periods to decide the outcome. These two programs met less than a year ago (Dec. 20) in Athens. Only a pair of improbable 3-pointers from Zac Swansey in the final 15 seconds -- the latter as the horn sounded -- enabled Georgia to pull off the victory.
Georgia plays its first road game of the season this Saturday at Alabama-Birmingham.
Georgia vs. Wofford
Tuesday’s game is the eighth all-time meeting between Georgia and Wofford in basketball. Georgia has won each of the first seven meetings.
The first five meetings took place during the 1920s when, ironically, Georgia was a member of the Southern Conference and not Wofford. The Terriers didn’t join the SoCon until 1997. Georgia was one of 13 schools to depart the SoCon in 1933 to form the SEC.
Wofford has come achingly close to winning both of the past two meetings between these two schools. On Dec. 12, 2004, the Terriers led Georgia by six with 43 seconds left. Given six foul shots to secure victory, they made just two and the Bulldogs capitalized by making two consecutive treys and sending the game into overtime. Last Dec. 20, Wofford’s Tim Johnson had two foul shots to lock down a victory with four ticks left. He missed both, giving rise to the buzzer-beating heroics of guard Zac Swansey.
Dogs Roll in Only Exhibition
Travis Leslie scored 21 points and led four double-figure scorers as Georgia easily defeated North Georgia in its only exhibition basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum last Friday night.
The Bulldogs, making their competitive debut under new coach Mark Fox, needed less than six minutes to build a double-digit lead. They built their advantage to 20 points by the 4:21 mark of the first half. In all, 12 of the 13 Georgia players that saw action scored.
Three other Bulldogs besides Leslie finished in double figures, as sophomore forward Trey Thompkins added eleven and Drazen Zlovaric and Ebuka Anayorah contributed with ten points apiece. Thompkins’ solid night included eight rebounds and two blocks, falling one board behind junior forward Chris Barnes who led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
