Georgia vs. New Orleans
Friday’s game is the third all-time meeting between Georgia and New Orleans in basketball. Georgia won both of the first two meetings:
- Nov. 30, 1973 in Athens: Georgia 94, New Orleans 63
- Dec. 18, 1987 in Tokyo, Japan*: Georgia 81, New Orleans 77
*Part of the “Phenix NCAA Ball” Invitational Tournament
Georgia officially tips off the Mark Fox era this evening with a home contest against Sun Belt Conference foe New Orleans.
Pre-season practice got its formal start four weeks ago to the day. Since then, the Bulldogs have engaged outside competition twice: on Sunday, Nov. 1 in a closed scrimmage at Clemson and last Friday in their only exhibition game against North Georgia.
The Bulldogs had little trouble in defeating North Georgia 87-53 in their exhibition game last week. Travis Leslie led four double-figure scorers with 21 points, as 11 of the 12 players that saw action scored in the game. Georgia needed just 5 1/2 minutes to open a double-digit lead and another 10 minutes to build that margin to 20 points.
For what it’s worth, Mark Fox is 4-1 in season openers. His last two Nevada teams opened the season with road games (loss at Central Florida in 2007-08; win at Montana State in ‘08-09). This will not be Fox’s first-ever regular-season game coaching in Stegeman Coliseum. His first Nevada team defeated Georgia here 58-47 on Nov. 26, 2004. It was the third game of his head coaching career.
Georgia last lost a home opener in November of 2004 against Western Kentucky.
Story Line For Tonight’s Game
This game represents a homecoming for UNO guard Billy Humphrey. The native of Chicago (moved to Dacula, Ga., in his 9th grade season) played three years at Georgia, lastly in 2008, and scored 844 career points. He played a key role in Georgia’s improbable SEC Tournament championship in ‘08. He also holds a place in the UGA record book as one of seven players to have had seven steals in a single game.
Dogs Roll in Only Exhibition
Travis Leslie scored 21 points and led four double-figure scorers as Georgia easily defeated North Georgia in its only exhibition basketball game at Stegeman Coliseum last Friday night.
The Bulldogs, making their competitive debut under new coach Mark Fox, needed less than six minutes to build a double-digit lead. They built their advantage to 20 points by the 4:21 mark of the first half. In all, 12 of the 13 Georgia players that saw action scored.
Three other Bulldogs besides Leslie finished in double figures, as sophomore forward Trey Thompkins added eleven and Drazen Zlovaric and Ebuka Anayorah contributed with ten points apiece. Thompkins’ solid night included eight rebounds and two blocks, falling one board behind junior forward Chris Barnes who led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
Jackson Likely Available
Center Albert Jackson, the team’s only 4-year senior, will most likely be available for service against New Orleans. He missed the North Georgia game last week after breaking a bone in his right hand just before pre-season practice began. He had his cast removed last week and has been working out in a protective splint.
One of three returning starters, Jackson averaged 4.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season. Ironically, his development was slowed during early-season play last year, too, after he suffered a high ankle sprain in Georgia’s lone exhibition game.
