ATHENS, Ga. --- Travis Leslie scored 21 points and led four double-figure scorers as Georgia easily defeated North Georgia in its only exhibition basketball game here Friday night.
The Bulldogs, making their competitive debut under new coach Mark Fox, needed less than six minutes to build a double-digit lead. They built their advantage to 20 points by the 4:21 mark of the first half. In all, 12 of the 13 Georgia players that saw action scored.
“I thought it was a good opening exhibition game”, said coach Fox. “Our team did a lot of things tonight that we were very pleased with, but there are many things we’ll have to work on to continue to get better. Our team is such a work in progress in so many ways.”
Three other Bulldogs besides Leslie finished in double figures, as sophomore forward Trey Thompkins added eleven and Drazen Zlovaric and Ebuka Anayorah contributed with ten points apiece. Thompkins’ solid night included eight rebounds and two blocks, falling one board behind junior forward Chris Barnes who led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds.
Fox’s Stegeman Coliseum debut was witnessed by a crowd of 4,580 Georgia fans, an impressive number for an exhibition contest and a testament to the positive sentiments building on campus for Coach Fox and the ’09-’10 Georgia Bulldogs.
Georgia tips off the regular season next Friday at home against New Orleans. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
