The Huesca, Spain, native is Georgia's lone representative in the ITA grand slam event. He was one of 12 players to receive an at-large bid.
"Javi had a tough opponent going up against the No. 1 player from Texas," associate head coach Will Glenn said. "He lost the first set, but fought back in the second set, got it to a breaker but just came up short. We are moving forward and he has a good chance for a few wins in the back draw."
Garrapiz, ranked No. 37, will face Texas Tech's 25th-ranked Raony Carvalho in the first round of the consolation draw Friday at 3:30 p.m. Carvalho fell to Oklahoma State's No. 2 seeded Nedovyesov Olekesandr in the first round.
Georgia senior Nate Schnugg won the consolation draw of the National Indoor Tournament in 2008.
